Special Treat Heading Home

Room 5 have been keeping busy preparing a Special Treat.  Room 5 have been busy making some special gifts for a special someone for Christmas. They have even decorated the wrapping paper themselves. Here are some of the wrapped up presents.

EOTC Week and Zoo Sleepover

We had a super busy Week 4!  We had a jampacked week full of a Library walk, Otari Bush activities, two days of school rotations, movie making and finally our Zoo sleepover! Check out some photos from the week below.

Spring is here!

In Japanese today we made our own Cherry Blossom paintings. We enjoyed using cotton tips and bottles to create the flowers.

City Gallery and Te Papa

We had a fantastic time at City Gallery and Te Papa last week.  We learnt about Maori Cultural art and then enjoyed exploring the new nature exhibit at Te Papa. While we were at the City Gallery we made our own screen prints of gourds with letters that symbolise something of our choice.  You can see them up close in the Learning Street before they go home at the end of term.

Calendar Art

Our Room has looked like a bomb site at times over the past few weeks but it has all been for a good cause!  Our calendar art has come in the form of landscape collages using magazines, so as you can imagine there were bits of magazine everywhere! They are coming along very nicely and we look forward to seeing all of the finished products. Here are some so far:

Workshops and Exploration

We've been busy in Kapowai Pod.  We had a lot of fun using the apps Brain VR and Quivervision to explore augmented reality during our exploration workshops.  If you want to explore this at home with a smart phone or tablet, check out this video about Quivervision. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tBYm53L79YY

Busy Day for Room 5!

What a busy day we have had!   The day started with a visit from Constable Taylor and we learnt all about how to be safe on the road.  We then put this into practice by going up onto the road and practiced how to safely cross the school driveway and the road.  Miss Young was too busy paying attention to the road to take pictures of us practicing! After Road Safety we had a session on Scooter Skills and learnt how to quickly and safely stop ourselves without using the foot brake because that is too slow!  It is called the Elephant Stomp (ask your child to explain or show you what this is). We also had a session with Project Energize today about Healthy food groups and how this food can help our bodies Glow, Grow and Go.  Constable Taylor talking about Road Safety Scooter Skills Scooter Skills Project Energize - Nutrition/Healthy Eating

Project Energize

We have been lucky to have some PE sessions with the guys from Project Energize. Last week we worked on large ball skills using games as a way to learn the skills.  We really enjoy this time as each session is something new.

Mean words and actions hurt

In Kapowai Pod teachers have been noticing mean words and actions between our students.  As a Pod we discussed how a persons feelings cannot be seen on the outside and that we do not always say how much something hurt us. To teach this lesson we used 2 identical apples.  One of the apples we said really nice things to and the other we were really mean to (if time had allowed, we would have used mean actions as well), we then apologised to the apple we were mean to.   We cut the 2 apples open.  The apple we had been nice to was unfortunately a little bruised (it was meant to be unblemished) but we talked about how sometimes people come to school feeling a little hurt, but mostly this "person" was feeling happy and good.  The apple we were mean to was very bruised and brown on the inside but looked perfect on the outside.  People may look fine on the outside but are hurt from words or actions that are said or done towards them.  We also used a tube of toothpaste to

Art Fun

We have been busy with art in our afternoon class time.  We have learnt how to proportion our faces when drawing self-portraits, what primary and complementary colours are, how to draw landscape pictures and how to mix colours when using dyes. We used the Outdoor classroom when drawing our landscapes. Take a look at our work in progress below.

We're off to a flying start!

Welcome to another wonderful year in Room 5! This year we are part of the Kapowai Pod.  Kapowai means Dragonfly in Te Reo.  Our four classes of our Middle Pod work together, just like the four wings of a dragonfly. As a class we have made a beautiful piece of art which can be seen in the window outside of our class. We have been enjoying getting to know each other so far this year.  Our Exploration SPACE and workshops have been a success and we look forward to learning new and exciting things.
